A Set of Six 19th Century Gillows Library Chairs

A Set of Six 19th Century Gillows Library Chairs

A run of oak and Moroccan leather library chairs attributed to Gillows of Lancaster.

Raised on glazed pot caster and turned tapering oak legs, Moroccan leather upholstered seat & back support, yoke shaped armrests, inverted heart motif back splat.

A similar armchair is illustrated in the Gillows estimate records for August 3, 1868, as intended for the county Magistrate’s council chamber.

Stylistically the chairs derive from several sources which include the 18th and 19th centuries, and very loosely from the traditional “Queen Anne” baluster shaped splat which was often pierced with such heart shapes.

However in its boldly chamfered pierced splat it also recalls detailing common in the Gothic Revival.

Very original examples retaining there factory applied finish to the timber, the leather is also all original with minor restitching to the upholstered armrests.

English, late 1860s.
