Painted Orkney Chair
A hooded Orkney chair in green paint.
A quite incredible piece, the hooded examples are scarce in there own right, I’ve only had one other period example. The lightly applied green paint was clearly done at time of manufacture and has aged beautifully, showing no restoration to the pine frame or rushing this chair is an outstanding survivor and worthy of further research as a high point of this particular vernacular folk art furniture.
Scottish, second half of 19th century.
